The UC controls are very sensitive: the aircraft responds
positively to the slightest movements of the stick. The rudder, by
contrast, seems too small and the response is sluggish. On the other hand,
the steering is very brisk.
|
|
Jack Roberts has designed a spring-loaded cartridge into the
tailwheel steering arm to damp the T/W response as regards the command from
the rudder “pedals” for rudder. I look forward to testing it (will this
week).

Visibility over the nose while taxiing is
so good one hardly needs to S turn. |

Heber City is at 5600’ and I have the 37HP version of the
one-half VW. My UC climbs very well. The panel is too small to contain a
rate-of-climb – there are more important instruments competing for space.
It accelerates to 75-80 mph at full throttle and holds that airspeed with
about 3100 rpm.

|
My one attempt at a power off stall was a non-event. The
UC warned me with mild aileron buffet and it simply mushed. I released back
pressure and it flew. |

It is easy to land and wants to three point.

Morry Hummel graciously let me fly his new "UltraCruiser". It's a blast,
takeoff is very easy and climb out impressive, cruise speed very good and stall very
low. The ailerons are quick to respond and very adequate, landings are easy but,
proper air speed is important, as this bird is slippery and loves to float. |

I have flown 43 different Ultralights and this is one of the nicest.

The UltraCruiser is a joy to fly. From the
time I accidentally got airborne for it's first flight, I couldn't wait to
get back up in it. It has the light plane characteristics, in a low
drag airplane.

Flip the prop over once, and the ˝ VW comes to
life. Line her up at the end of the runway, shove in on the power, and
in a 150 feet (on grass, very little on pavement) you're off. Climb
out is at 1000+ fpm. Very pleasant to fly and very slippery, cruising
at 80 mph, with a stroked ˝ VW in it right now, but this plane will
perform nicely with a 28-32 hp, will be trying a 32 hp soon.

Landing is my favorite part, most will argue on
this statement, because I always just take back off, but that's just so I
can go around and do it all over again. Touch down is very soft at 25 mph,
with very little roll out at that speed, and that's the best part, because
there is always a crowd around when I crawl out, commenting on how
impressing the flight was.

It can handle a good cross wind, not sure of the
exact component, but at 70mph air speed, the gps showed 38 mph ground speed.
With the wind blowing 45-60 degree to the runway it was still very
manageable, just had to fly the 249 lb plane to the ground.

Visibility is great out of the bubble canopy, and I
love to just fly around checking out the county. |
|
Thanks Morry for letting me be involved in your new project. |
