CA-2 Plans
Introduction
By Morry Hummel
The CA-2 is a legal ultralight, it meets
all Part 103 requirements. The CA-2 weighs 250 lbs when empty. The cockpit is
24" wide and 48" long--plenty of room for big pilots.
Construction is simple, with all
pop rivets and bolt assembly. All materials are off
the shelf items. It is very inexpensive to build.
Build time is approximately 600 hrs for the CA-2. The
airframe cost is about $2,500. Sheet metal is the easiest and
least cost for building any aircraft. Also, aluminum
has built in safety factor of 50% and has guaranteed
structural properties. Building support is as close as your phone or
e-mail. There is a great newsletter for only $10 per
year.
The Origin of the design
By
Frank Griffith, Designer
Several ago I was
looking for an inexpensive way to get into flying. Ultralights were attractive but
there were few plans available for building the planes from scratch (which is the lowest
cost way of building). The plans that were available were for wood and fabric or
tube and fabric. I really wanted to work in sheet metal since my shop is not
heated. At that point, I started conceptually thinking about the possibility of
building one out of sheet metal. The task was difficult since there were no previous
designs to look at. After some thinking and sketching, it seemed like the idea was
probably feasible.
However, I was
convinced enough that a metal ultralight was possible so I quit my job as a corporate
aerospace engineer, sold the home, and moved into an old family farmstead in southwest
Iowa. Then I devoted full time to the possibility. A shop was set up in an out
building with a small office. Some tools were purchased and a small computer was set
up for design work. For the next two years, I designed, experimented, and tested
several approaches to a metal ultralight.
Finally, a strut
supported low wing type design began to emerge. Then the detailed design and
analysis were performed and construction began in March of 1992. Four months later
it was complete and I started testing in July of 1992. The aircraft has exceeded my
initial expectations both in flying and building effort. It has gentle ultralight
flying qualities and the building time is reasonable. Many people have expressed an
interest so I've made plans available to others who are looking for an inexpensive metal
ultralight.
Features and Specifications
The CA-2 is a light all metal legal ultralight (with Rotax
277) aircraft that can be built inexpensively from plans (approximately $2,000-2,500 for
airframe) in 600 hours. Easy construction from sheet, angle extrusions, tubing and
pop rivets. No welding, gluing, machining, or difficult forming required.
Fuselage assembly performed on a flat table and wing assembly using a simple wood jig.
Strong all metal wing (utility category
+4.4, -2.2g), smooth push rod controls, large ailerons and rudder, wide landing gear
stance for easy ground handling, and wing detaches with removal of three bolts.
